The flag of Ireland is a rectangular tricolour of green, white, and orange. The green band is at the hoist side, the white band is in the middle, and the orange band is at the fly side. The green represents the Irish nationalist movement, the orange represents the minority Protestant community in Ireland, and the white represents the lasting peace between these two groups. The flag was adopted by the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence in 1919 and has been the national flag of the Republic of Ireland since 1922.
